Wanted: potential players for a highly enjoyable and addictive mixed sport will be introduced to Canberra in the near future, called Jugger.

The game is free to play and all gear is supplied. It will be played in a park close to Civic on weekends, on an informal, no pressure, "turn up as you wish" basis.

The basics:

Jugger is a tactical, five-a-side outdoor game, played on a 30x15m field. It follows the usual formula of outmanoeuvring the opposing team and scoring goals. Only one designated player in each team can handle the ball. The remainder of the team have the job of protecting this player or their own goal from opposing players. To do this they use padded "weapons" (made of PVC and soft foam) to tag opposing players. When tagged, a player is "out" for a set number of seconds before they can rejoin play.

Safety is paramount: the "weapons" are well padded, constantly safety checked and the rules limit risky play. There is less injury risk in Jugger than other weekend games like soccer, netball and dodgeball !

Jugger stems from Germany and is gaining popularity in other European countries. In Australia, groups have been established in Melbourne and Brisbane so far.

This is a competitive, yet friendly game, suitable for both genders and most levels of fitness. There are roles within the team for the fit and fast (e.g. attacking players and goal scorers), as well as those who prefer a slower pace (defenders and melee specialists). All are welcome, however at this stage players need to be 17 years or older.

First game will occur on Sunday June 28 and will be played on a fortnightly basis. If you would like to be on the mailing list to receive updates about the game then please contact me.
