Our elderly cat Killie (see ad below) went missing on Sunday morning in the space of one hour. We searched the neighbourhood and questioned neighbours thoroughly. Details of the cat were sent to the RSPCA and the Gumtree ad posted on Sunday night. The RSPCA posted the missing cat ad on their site the next morning, minus all the detail and photo, stating only his name, age and colour 'tabby', despite a clear description having been sent detailing his condition as well as appearance. We also posted notices around the neighbourhood on Monday. On Monday morning my mother also called the RSPCA to see if they had received the cat. They claimed they had not.

Finally on Tuesday a person called to report that she had found a cat matching the description of Killie, frail and disoriented, and taken him to a vet in Braddon on Sunday. My mother called the vet who claimed that no lost cats had been brought in, according to their database. My brother called a second time to check and got the same answer. My brother-in-law rang again for the third time on the same day and spoke to a different person who said that the cat had come in on Sunday but had been sent to the RSPCA on Monday morning. They had not recorded any details in their database.

By this time the RSPCA was closed, but the next morning at 9am (Wednesday) my mother and brother went to the RSPCA. On arrival they were told that our cat had been put down just 24 hours after having arrived, the day before. They had not entered him in their database, nor even checked their own records of reported missing cats, nor checked with other staff who might have received calls about him.

The manager was very apologetic and assured us that measures would taken to prevent simliar communication breakdowns in the future. Killie was old and we understood the vet's rationale for putting him down, but understandably we were all quite shocked at comedy of errors we had come across which ultimately led to the untimely death of our cat.

I do not wish to criticise the RSPCA who do their best with limited resources, but I implore you to follow up all avenues again and again if you have lost a pet. If we hadn't tried so hard we would never have tracked him down, and despite our efforts it was still too late. Don't rely on the internet to help you find your pet.

I sincerely hope that you have better luck in finding your pet than we did.

Missing cat - Ainslie

Our much loved family pet has gone missing.
His name is Achillies (Killie).
He is a large tabby and white domestic short hair.
Killie is 16 years old, timid and quite blind. He has recently been diagnosed with vestibuar disease which makes him dizzy and disoriented.
He went missing from our front porch on Bonney Street in Ainslie between 8 and 9am on Sunday 23rd August.

We are very worried about him and fear the worst, but hope for the best.
